Biotin Deficiency & Hair Loss

A friend of mine recently shared her secrets to keeping beautiful, healthy hair, which included regular wash days, exercise, healthy eating, using my entire line of products on her locs exclusively for years, AND a supplement called biotin, also known as Vitamin B7. This got me to thinking about B7 in particular, so I did some research on biotin deficiency and hair health.

Biotin, often referred to as Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H, is a water-soluble B-vitamin that plays a crucial role in our body's metabolic processes. It's best known for its ability to promote healthy hair, skin, and nails. However, its functions go far beyond just enhancing our outer beauty.

What Causes Biotin Deficiency?

Dietary Factors

A diet lacking in foods rich in biotin, such as eggs, nuts, and leafy greens, can contribute to deficiency.

Medications

Certain medications, particularly antibiotics, can interfere with biotin absorption in the gut.

Gastrointestinal Disorders

Conditions like Crohn's disease or celiac disease can hinder the body's ability to absorb biotin properly.

Genetic Factors

Rare genetic disorders may affect biotin metabolism, making individuals more prone to deficiency.

How Does Biotin Affect Your Hair, Skin, and Nails?

Hair

Biotin plays a significant role in promoting hair growth and maintaining hair's strength and thickness. A deficiency may lead to hair thinning or brittle hair.

Skin

Biotin helps keep your skin healthy by supporting its barrier function. A lack of biotin can result in dry and irritated skin.

Nails

Weak, brittle nails are another potential effect of biotin deficiency. Your nails may become fragile and more prone to breaking.

How Does Biotin Deficiency Affect the Body?

Beyond its beauty-enhancing properties, biotin plays a vital role in several essential bodily functions:

Digestive Troubles

Biotin helps your stomach and intestines break down food. Without enough biotin, you might experience stomach problems like diarrhea or constipation.

Nerve Issues

Biotin is important for your nerves. It helps make a protective layer around them. When you lack biotin, you may experience numbness, tingling, or even feel depressed.

Sluggish Metabolism

Biotin helps your body use food for energy. Without it, your metabolism might slow down, making you feel tired and even gain weight.

Weak Immune System

Low biotin levels can weaken your immune system, making it easier for you to get sick.

Biotin's Connection to Hormonal Imbalances

Hormone Regulation

Biotin plays a role in maintaining hormonal balance. Hormones control various processes, from your monthly menstrual cycles to your ability to have children and even your mood. When biotin levels are low, these processes can become irregular and cause hormonal imbalances. This can cause irregular periods, fertility issues, and mood swings.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

This is a hormonal disorder that affects the ovaries. PCOS often involves insulin resistance. Biotin helps improve insulin sensitivity. By doing so, it can help regulate hormonal imbalances associated with PCOS. This tends to help with some of the symptoms of PCOS, including irregular periods, acne, and excess hair growth.

Understanding the causes and effects of biotin deficiency, as well as its link to hormonal imbalances, can empower us to make informed choices for our well-being. If you suspect a deficiency or experience related issues, consult a healthcare professional for guidance and potential supplementation.

Have always loved your products!

I started using your products about four years ago, my hair grew like crazy. I had to keep coloring it to keep the gray out, but decided to go Natural, my gray came in beautifully, and my hair is still growing. Thank you Nae Nae.

I normally wear my hair in the two strands twist without or without hair added. My edges became so thin, my hair would tangle so much be so hard to untangle and I have tried many hair products to make my hair nice. I want it beautiful.
