How Often Should You Trim Your Hair?

I get a lot of questions on hair cuts - when, how often, why...  The answer isn’t the same for everyone because it depends on factors like hair type, length, and your hair goals. Let’s break it down in a simple and educational way so you can make the best decision for your hair.

Let’s talk about why trimming is necessary in the first place. Over time, the ends of your hair can become damaged due to styling, environmental factors, or just normal wear and tear. Split ends and breakage make your hair look frizzy and uneven. Regular trims help get rid of those damaged ends and keep your hair looking healthy.

But here’s the thing: trimming doesn’t make your hair grow faster. Hair grows from the scalp, not the ends. However, trimming helps prevent breakage from traveling up the hair shaft, which can make it seem like your hair isn’t growing. Keeping your ends healthy allows your hair to grow longer and stay strong.

How Often Should You Trim Based on Your Hair Type?

Curly or Coily Hair

Curly and coily hair textures are naturally more prone to dryness, which can lead to breakage. But, because the hair is coiled, it can be harder to spot split ends. Curly hair can usually go a bit longer between trims, around 8-12 weeks. Be sure to keep your hair well-moisturized to prevent breakage between trims.

Thick or Wavy Hair

If your hair is thick or wavy, you can probably get away with trimming less often, maybe every 8-10 weeks. Thick hair is usually stronger and can handle more wear and tear, but you should still check your ends regularly to make sure they’re not getting too damaged.

  • Tightly Coiled (4A-4C) Hair: Every 8-12 weeks. Coily hair is prone to shrinkage, which can hide split ends. While you don’t need to trim as frequently as other hair types, regular trims are still important to prevent damage.

  • Curly (3A-3C) Hair: Every 10-12 weeks. Curly hair is also prone to dryness and can experience frizz and tangling if split ends aren’t removed.

  • Relaxed or Chemically Treated Hair: Every 6-8 weeks. Chemically treated hair is more fragile and tends to break easily. Frequent trims help remove damaged ends and keep the hair strong.

How Often Should You Trim Based on Your Hair Goals?

Maintaining Length

If you’re happy with your current hair length and just want to keep it looking healthy, regular trims every 8-10 weeks are a good rule of thumb. This will help keep your ends in good condition without sacrificing too much length.

Growing Your Hair

If you’re trying to grow your hair longer, you might think you should skip trims, but that’s not a good idea. Regular trims help prevent breakage, which actually allows your hair to grow out longer in the long run. Trimming every 10-12 weeks is a good balance when you’re focused on growth.

Dealing with Damaged Hair

If you’re dealing with a lot of split ends or damage from heat styling, coloring, or other chemical treatments, you may need to trim more frequently. In this case, trimming every 6 weeks will help remove the damaged parts of your hair faster, allowing you to eventually grow healthier hair.

How to Know When It’s Time for a Trim

If you’re not sure whether it’s time for a trim, here are some signs to look out for:

  • Split ends: If your ends look frayed or uneven, it’s time for a trim.

  • Tangled hair: If your hair is getting tangled easily, it may be due to damaged ends.

  • Thinning ends: If the ends of your hair are noticeably thinner than the rest of your strands, it’s time to cut off the damaged part.

  • Frizz: Excessive frizz, especially at the ends, is often a sign that your hair needs a trim.

Tips to Make Your Trim Last Longer

Once you’ve had your trim, there are a few things you can do to keep your ends healthy and stretch the time between cuts.

Use Heat Sparingly

Heat tools like flat irons, curling irons, and blow dryers can cause damage over time. Try to limit how often you use them, and always use a heat protectant spray when you do.

Moisturize Regularly

Keeping your hair moisturized is key to preventing breakage. Use leave-in conditioners, hair oils, or deep conditioning treatments to keep your strands hydrated.

Protect Your Hair at Night

Sleeping on a satin or silk pillowcase, or wearing a satin bonnet, can help reduce friction while you sleep and keep your ends from becoming damaged.

Be Gentle

Brushing or combing your hair too roughly can cause breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb or a brush designed for your hair type, and always start detangling from the ends and work your way up.

How often you should trim your hair depends on your hair type, its condition, and your hair goals. Straight and fine hair may need trims more often, while curly and thick hair can go a bit longer. Trimming regularly helps maintain healthy ends, whether you’re growing your hair out or simply keeping it at its current length.

No matter what, remember that healthy hair starts with good care, and regular trims are just one piece of the puzzle.

Have always loved your products!

I started using your products about four years ago, my hair grew like crazy. I had to keep coloring it to keep the gray out, but decided to go Natural, my gray came in beautifully, and my hair is still growing. Thank you Nae Nae.

I normally wear my hair in the two strands twist without or without hair added. My edges became so thin, my hair would tangle so much be so hard to untangle and I have tried many hair products to make my hair nice. I want it beautiful.
