What Is Androgenetic Alopecia?

Understanding Hereditary Hair Thinning in Our Community

Let’s Talk About Hair Thinning That Runs in the Family

If your part is looking wider or your crown isn’t as full as it used to be, it might not just be “getting older.” For a lot of us, especially women over 35, this could be Androgenetic Alopecia—hereditary hair thinning.

One of our subscribers, Toni from Atlanta, asked us this last month:

“My mom and aunt both wear wigs full-time now. I’m starting to see my crown thinning too. Is it just genetics, or is something wrong with my scalp?”

This is exactly the kind of question we get every week. So let’s break it down.

What Is Androgenetic Alopecia?

It’s a genetic condition that causes your hair to grow back thinner and shorter over time. This happens slowly, and many women don’t notice until it’s already pretty advanced. While it’s more common after 40, we see it in women as early as their late 20s.

In women, it usually shows up as thinning around the crown, temples, or a widening part—not bald patches like with other conditions.

What Causes It?

It’s mainly caused by two things:

1.  Your genes

If women in your family have experienced hair thinning or wore wigs early, this might run in your bloodline.

2.  Androgens (hormones)

These are hormones like testosterone. Even in small amounts, they can shrink your hair follicles if your body is sensitive to them. This sensitivity can be triggered by things like:

  • Menopause or perimenopause

  • Birth control or hormonal IUDs

  • PCOS

  • Certain medications

How It Affects Your Hair, Scalp, and Nails

  • Hair:

Your strands may feel finer and look less full. You might notice your twist-outs or roller sets don’t fluff like they used to. Your ponytail might feel smaller.

  • Scalp:

You’ll start to see more of your scalp in the areas where the follicles are shrinking. You might also feel a little more dryness or sensitivity over time.

  • Nails:

While this condition doesn’t target nails directly, weak or slow-growing nails can sometimes signal a broader hormone imbalance that might be tied in.

Real Question from a Subscriber

Q: “Can you really regrow hair with a natural product if it’s genetic?”

A: If the follicle hasn’t completely closed off, yes—growth is still possible. What you need is a routine that reduces inflammation, stimulates blood flow, and keeps the scalp nourished. That’s what our Hair Boost does—especially when paired with deep conditioning and a bi-weekly Wash Day cycle.

What to Look For....

Here’s what many Boosties report before they realize it’s Androgenetic Alopecia:

  • You’re buying edge control more often, but your edges aren't holding.

  • You switch up your part to hide thinning spots.

  • Your styles don’t last like they used to—especially protective styles near the crown.

  • You feel like you’ve been doing everything right, but your hair still feels thin or flat.

  • Your part is widening or ponytail thinning

  • You have more scalp showing, especially in photos or under bright lights

  • You have slow regrowth in areas where you had fullness before

  • You have a family history of thinning hair or early hair loss

It often creeps in quietly, so comparing old photos can help you spot the changes.

One of our longtime Boosties, Cheryl in Maryland, shared her experience:

“I used to wear flat twists to work every week. But one day I noticed I had to pull from farther back just to cover the top. I started using Hair Boost 3x a week, and after 3 months, my stylist said she could see more fullness at the roots again.”

If you see signs of hereditary thinning, take it seriously—but don’t panic.

Many of our Boosties have slowed or reversed visible thinning with the right care and consistency.

    Have always loved your products!

I started using your products about four years ago, my hair grew like crazy. I had to keep coloring it to keep the gray out, but decided to go Natural, my gray came in beautifully, and my hair is still growing. Thank you Nae Nae.

I normally wear my hair in the two strands twist without or without hair added. My edges became so thin, my hair would tangle so much be so hard to untangle and I have tried many hair products to make my hair nice. I want it beautiful.
