Understanding Petroleum in Beauty Products

If you’ve ever used a hair grease that promised “shine and protection,” there’s a good chance it contained petroleum. It sounds harmless—after all, we’ve seen it in countless beauty products for years. But here’s the truth: petroleum can actually create more problems for our hair than it solves, especially if you’re struggling with dryness, breakage, or stunted growth.

Let’s break down why petroleum is hiding in many products, what it does to our strands, and what you can use instead to keep your curls thriving.

What Is Petroleum?

Petroleum (often labeled as petrolatum or mineral oil) is a byproduct of crude oil. It’s cheap to make, and it coats the hair with a thick layer of grease that creates instant shine. That’s why it’s been a staple in many “old-school” hair care products.

But here’s the catch: that shine is only surface-level. Underneath, our strands are still thirsty for real moisture.

Why Petroleum Is a Problem for Our Hair

1. It Seals Out Moisture

Petroleum forms a heavy barrier on the scalp and hair shaft. While that might sound protective, it actually blocks water and hydrating ingredients from getting in. Without proper moisture, curls become dry, brittle, and prone to breakage.

2. It Traps Dirt and Buildup

Because petroleum is so thick, it can hold on to dirt, sweat, and old product residue. This buildup clogs our scalp and suffocates our hair follicles—slowing growth and sometimes even causing scalp irritation.

3. It’s Hard to Wash Out

If you’ve ever had to shampoo multiple times and still felt greasy, petroleum was likely the culprit. Unlike natural oils, petroleum doesn’t dissolve easily in water, which can lead to more shampooing, more stripping, and even more dryness.

4. It Gives a False Sense of Health

That glossy finish petroleum creates can be deceiving. Your hair may look smooth and shiny, but beneath the surface, it’s often dehydrated and in need of real nourishment.

Safe, Natural Alternatives to Petroleum

  • Shea Butter – Rich in vitamins A and E to repair and soften hair.

  • Coconut Oil – Helps reduce protein loss and prevent breakage.

  • Castor Oil – Stimulates scalp and promotes healthy hair growth.

  • Jojoba Oil – Mimics our scalp’s natural oils for balanced hydration.

These ingredients not only create shine but also nourish from the inside out, helping our curls stay strong and healthy.

Real Question from a Subscriber

Q: How do I know if my current products contain petroleum?

A: Check the ingredient list. Look for “petrolatum,” “mineral oil,” or “paraffinum liquidum.” If you see any of these near the top of the list, it’s time to switch to something that truly feeds your hair instead of smothering it.

How to Detox Your Hair from Petroleum

If you’ve been using petroleum-heavy products, don’t worry—it’s never too late to make a change. Here’s a simple detox plan:

  1. Clarify Your Hair – Use a gentle clarifying shampoo (like our PURIFY Step 1) to remove heavy buildup.

  2. Deep Condition – Follow up with a nourishing hair mask to restore moisture.

  3. Switch to Natural Products – Look for labels that are free from petroleum, mineral oil, and sulfates.

  4. Be Patient – It may take a few wash days for your hair to fully adjust, but your curls will thank you.

Hair & Scalp Salve: HAIR BOOST 4oz - 3 Month Supply

Where's the Shea Butter?

What happened to the Shea butter? It is the first ingredient listed on the package. I received three jars of oil with Shea butter crumbs at the bottom of the jar. This is certainly not the same product I ordered last year. What happened? If I could return it without it making a mess in the box, I would.

Have always loved your products!

I started using your products about four years ago, my hair grew like crazy. I had to keep coloring it to keep the gray out, but decided to go Natural, my gray came in beautifully, and my hair is still growing. Thank you Nae Nae.
