Understanding SLS and SLES in Beauty Products

The Importance

In our daily personal care routines, we often come into contact with various products like shampoos, body washes, and toothpaste. While these products promise cleanliness and freshness, some may contain harmful ingredients that could jeopardize our well-being. Two such culprits are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and its close cousin, Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). These widely used ingredients, found in many personal care items, might not be as innocent as they seem.

What is SLS and SLES

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) are surfactants commonly added to personal care products for their foaming and cleaning properties. They create that luxurious lather in shampoos and soaps that we've all come to associate with cleanliness. However, their popularity in these products comes at a price.

Real Question from a Subscriber

Q: Is “sulfate-free” just a trend, or does it really make a difference?

A: It absolutely makes a difference. Sulfate-free formulas cleanse your hair without stripping your scalp’s natural protective barrier. For our community especially, it helps preserve curl definition, shine, and hydration—so your wash day actually supports your growth goals.

Cause and Effect

SLS and SLES are known to strip away the skin's natural oils, leaving it dry and vulnerable to irritation. Frequent use of products containing these sulfates may lead to redness, itching, and exacerbation of skin conditions like eczema.

If you've ever experienced stinging or burning in your eyes while using certain shampoos or body washes, chances are it's due to SLS or SLES. These sulfates can irritate the eyes, causing discomfort and tearing.

Beyond their direct impact on the skin and eyes, there is another disconcerting issue associated with SLS and SLES – contamination with a known carcinogen known as 1,4-dioxane. During the manufacturing process, SLES can be contaminated with this hazardous chemical. Exposure to 1,4-dioxane has been linked to various health concerns, including cancer.

What You Can Do

As consumers, we should prioritize products that are free from these harmful sulfates and look for alternatives that promote our well-being without compromising effectiveness. All of Nae Nae's Naturals products, from shampoos to conditioners and moisturizers, are SLS and SLES-free and vegan friendly. Even better, our flagship product the Hair Boost is Handmade with 19 all natural essential oils and butters that includes rosemary and vitamin E.

Customer Testimonial

Tasha M., Maryland

“I didn’t realize how harsh my old shampoo was until I stopped using it ... For years, I thought that squeaky clean feeling meant my hair was getting healthier. But my scalp stayed dry, and my curls got more brittle with every wash. I finally checked the label and saw Sodium Lauryl Sulfate listed first. Once I switched to Nae Nae’s Purify Shampoo, it was a game-changer. My scalp stopped flaking, and my hair holds moisture way better now. I had no idea SLS was doing all that damage.”

As a natural haircare brand, we urge you to make informed choices when selecting beauty products. Opt for SLS and SLES-free alternatives to protect your hair, scalp, and your entire body from potential harm. Your beauty regimen should enhance your natural radiance, not compromise your health.

Remember, your hair deserves the best care possible, and that includes using products that prioritize your well-being.

Have always loved your products!

I started using your products about four years ago, my hair grew like crazy. I had to keep coloring it to keep the gray out, but decided to go Natural, my gray came in beautifully, and my hair is still growing. Thank you Nae Nae.

I normally wear my hair in the two strands twist without or without hair added. My edges became so thin, my hair would tangle so much be so hard to untangle and I have tried many hair products to make my hair nice. I want it beautiful.
